Pastor Marvin Winans: "We have failed our sons and have allowed their hero’s to be thugs and thieves"

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Sunday morning, before his message to the congregation at the Perfecting Church, Pastor Marvin Winans addressed the press giving an update on his physical condition by thanking God for allowing him to suffer such a harrowing experience and the grace to walk away from it.

Recalling the robbery in detail, he said a young woman gave him a ride back to his church after the incident, remarking to him that he had given so much to the community. "I looked at her and I said 'I'm just sad ... to think we have reared young men to prey -- p-r-e-y -- on people that they think are weaker,' " he said.

Detroit Tigers Salute Negro Baseball League This Weekend

Meijer Grocery Breaks Ground at Detroit’s Gateway Marketplace

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - The long absence of major grocery chains in Detroit has painted a bleak picture of the city as a food desert, those days may be coming to an end.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Gateway Marketplace with Michigan based Meijer Grocery Store as the anchor tenant was held Thursday; it is the second time this week that a national grocery chain broke ground in Detroit, earlier Whole Foods Market celebrated plans to open a store in Midtown by 2013.

SW Detroit breaths sigh of relief, new truck route opens near Ambassador Bridge

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Michigan is celebrating the opening of a new road designed to get thousands of trucks off residential streets near the Ambassador Bridge in Southwest Detroit.

Although the access route opened to traffic Monday afternoon, it was officially opened by Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, who addressed the community Tuesday morning near the bridge, which is a gateway to Windsor, Ontario, over the Detroit River.

POLICE BEAT: Two incidents that occurred today, May 20, 2012


DETROIT - 1) - In the 7000 block of Grandville, around 11:00 a.m., three male victims, aged 19, 18, and 16, were standing outside, when suspect(s) fired multiple shots from a gray colored vehicle, as it passed by.

All of the victims are listed in temp-serious condition. The circumstances surrounding this incident are unknown at this time.

2) - At a local hotel, located in the 300 block of Gratiot Avenue, a female victim, aged 77, was discovered unresponsive in the hot tub. The victim has died. A medical examination’s determination for the cause of death will be required. Detroit Police was notified around 12:30 p.m.

DETROIT, MI - A number of well-known local performers – including some legendary Motor City acts – will add to an impressive entertainment lineup at the June 1-3 Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix.

Grand Prix organizers proudly announced that Motown pioneers the Four Tops will perform the United States National Anthem prior to the start of the IZOD IndyCar Series race – the Chevrolet Indy Grand Prix presented by shopautoweek.com – on Sunday, June, 3. Known for their numerous hits including “Baby I Need Your Loving” and “Reach Out I’ll Be There,” the Four Tops have come to symbolize the Motown sound.  


Donna Summer, Queen of Disco, dies at 63


NEW YORK - Disco queen Donna Summer, whose pulsing anthems such as "Last Dance," "Love to Love You Baby" and "Bad Girls" became the soundtrack for a glittery age of sex, drugs, dance and flashy clothes, has died. She was 63.

Her family released a statement saying Summer died Thursday morning and that they "are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy."
